Client
NDA project. A commercial project in a highly competitive niche where organic traffic from search engines was one of the key channels for attracting target users.
Objectives
- systematically increase organic traffic by improving the site’s visibility in search
- improve rankings for target keywords and bring more phrases into the TOP 3 and TOP 10
- build a high-quality external backlink profile that increases search engine trust and carries no risk of penalties
- create a foundation for stable growth without relying solely on paid advertising
Initial Situation
At the start of the project, the website had a limited number of high-quality external links. Organic traffic was noticeably below the niche’s potential, while competitors had much stronger backlink profiles. Any aggressive experiments with mass link purchases could have caused harm, so the focus was immediately placed on a safe, controlled, and predictable strategy.
We understood that quick results were unlikely. The priority was building trust with search engines through the gradual acquisition of relevant links from vetted and reliable resources.
Approach
Safe Link Building Strategy
We deliberately rejected the idea of quick wins through cheap mass placements. Instead, we chose a strategy where every new link was treated as an investment in the site’s trust and reputation.
Over the course of 1.5 years, we systematically acquired and placed a significant number of links. A key point was that the effect did not appear immediately. What worked was the mechanism of accumulated trust in the eyes of search engines. Gradually, the site began to be perceived as a more authoritative source, which ultimately became the foundation for a sharp increase in organic traffic once a critical mass of high-quality backlinks had been reached.
Donor Selection Criteria
A major strength of the strategy was the strict selection of donor websites. We consciously avoided working with low-quality or questionable resources, even if they offered attractive pricing.
The main selection criteria included:
- country and market relevance of the project, with no random sites from regions outside the strategy
- domain type and its history
- balance between inbound and outbound links on the donor site
- topical relevance of the content to the client’s niche
- metrics such as DR, UR, TF, and other domain authority indicators
- reasonable placement cost and readiness for long-term cooperation
An additional challenge was the continuous emergence of new quality platforms and the need to negotiate with site owners. In practice, this was one of the core difficulties: constantly finding and validating new donors that fully met all strategic requirements.
Managing the Link Profile Over 1.5 Years
We worked in small but regular waves. Some links pointed to the homepage, others to key categories, and others to individual materials that were critical for target queries. The link structure, anchor list, and distribution across pages were carefully planned to ensure the profile looked as natural as possible.
In parallel, we monitored:
- ranking changes for core keyword groups
- organic traffic dynamics
- behavioral metrics of users coming from search
This allowed us to adjust the plan, shift focus to pages with the highest growth potential, and avoid excessive link concentration on individual URLs.
Results
After 1.5 years of consistent link building, we recorded a pronounced effect from the accumulated trust of search engines.

Key achievements:
- organic traffic increased by 36x compared to initial levels
- the number of keywords in the TOP 3 grew by 30x
- the number of keywords in the TOP 10 increased by 25x
In effect, the site reached a completely new level of visibility. At the start, it was one of many players losing out due to a weaker backlink profile. After implementing the strategy, it became a resource with a strong and stable presence in organic search.
For the business, this meant:
- a significant increase in targeted organic traffic without a proportional increase in advertising costs
- a noticeable rise in inquiries and potential customers coming from search
- reduced dependence on paid acquisition channels and more predictable marketing budget planning
Next Steps
To maintain the achieved results and continue growth, it is important to treat link building not as a one-time campaign, but as an ongoing process. Search algorithms evolve, competitors strengthen their backlink profiles, and therefore maintaining and developing the strategy must remain a priority.
Recommended actions:

- regularly review the donor list, refresh the pool of sites, and continue working only with resources that meet quality requirements
- maintain a steady pace of link acquisition without sharp spikes, taking seasonality and niche dynamics into account
- periodically analyze competitors’ backlink profiles to understand market changes and identify new opportunities
- continue integrating link building with the content strategy, promoting not only commercial pages but also valuable materials that build brand expertise
This approach allows not only maintaining achieved positions but also gradually expanding site visibility, strengthening its status as an authoritative source in the eyes of search engines.
The niche was highly competitive, and aggressive mass link acquisition could have led to penalties. Therefore, a gradual strategy focused on building search engine trust and achieving stable, risk-free growth was selected.
Donor sites were selected based on country and market relevance, topical relevance, domain history, the balance of inbound and outbound links, and authority metrics such as DR, UR, and TF. Low-quality or questionable resources were completely excluded.
Links were built in controlled waves and distributed between the homepage, key category pages, and selected content assets. This approach helped create a natural backlink profile without over-optimizing individual URLs.
A clear impact became visible after reaching a critical mass of high-quality backlinks. At that point, the site began to be perceived by search engines as an authoritative source, which led to exponential growth in organic traffic and keyword rankings.
